Manfred’s way of working fascinates us because the painter doesn’t know the final result until the moment it reveals itself on the canvas. There is no GPS that leads the painter to his goal or whispers softly in his ear at every turn he has to make. It’s not so much the final goal that counts for him but the winding road that leads to it, the work process with its ups and downs, its side roads, its traps and treacherous differences in height. In other words: the adventure! Again and again, on every canvas.
From time to time black African graphic characters emerge in his paintings. They are put in or against a background of deep saturated colours, made up as a residue by applying layer upon layer upon layer upon layer and letting the transparent colours dry slowly. This is the way Manfred designs his very own handwriting. His paintings bathe in an exotic atmosphere that reveals his knowledge of the African culture and his relation to black people and their habits. Craftsmanship, patience, expertly controlled chance and a great love of Africa are the solid pillars of these thorough, high-quality paintings. |
Manfred Szeszka: “Twee jaar na de bloedige burgeroorlog in Sierra Leone, ontdekte ik een oude, kapotgeschoten deur waarop iemand in inktzwarte letters de volgende tekst had geverfd: ‘You ask, I say. Love me as you see me!’ |
Manfred Szeszka: “Two years after the terrible civil war in Sierra Leone, I discovered an old door that was completely shot in pieces. Someone had painted the following text with black characters: ‘You ask, I say. Love me as you see me!’ These painful words, together with the shape and the colour of the door, as well as the whole scenery, impressed me very much. I tried to express this picture on a painting by using the blue of a pure blue sky and the deepest black of the African nights. |
